How to choose Headphone Amplifiers

This guide covers the 13 headphone amplifiers reviewed from Douk Audio's store at doukaudio.com: nine Douk Audio, three Nobsound and one Ampapa, at $36.99 to $219.99 as priced on October 23, 2026. Amplifiers sold by HiFiGO, added on October 28, 2026, have their own reviews on this page and are not counted below. Start with the plug on your headphones. Six listings have a balanced headphone output (4.4mm or 4-pin XLR, for headphones wired with separate positive and negative conductors for each ear): the Ampapa H1, E2, Z1, P5, U5 and U5PRO. Six of the others list 3.5mm or 6.35mm jacks, and the P10 PRO page names none. The U5 and U5PRO also take only a balanced XLR input, so an RCA source needs a converter. Then compare drive: nine listings quote power at 32 ohms, from 430mW (Z1) to 1500mW or more (U3 PRO, U5PRO), while the H1 (up to 4000mW) and E2 (up to 2000mW) name no load impedance and the P5 and P10 PRO give no power figure.

Impedance, the electrical load of the headphones in ohms, is stated as a matching range: 16-300 ohms for the Q2PRO, 16-600 for the H1, E2 and P5, 18-600 for the U10, U3 and U5, and 24-600 for the P32 and P10. Six are tube amplifiers (the H1, E2, P5, U10, P32 and the battery-powered P10 PRO) and three are sold as Class A (the H1, U3 and U3 PRO), a design whose output stage stays switched on, which the listings tie to low distortion. Two, the Z1 and Q2PRO, are gaming amplifiers with a USB DAC (the chip that turns digital audio into an analog signal), microphone inputs and mixing. The P10 PRO runs on two 600mAh lithium batteries, 8-10 hours of playback per the listing, and says to avoid fast chargers.

Douk Audio's store applies the same terms to every one of its listings: shipping in 2-8 business days with duties, taxes and customs included in the checkout price unless noted; returns requested within 30 days of delivery and approved by Douk first, shipped back within 7 days of approval, with original shipping fees and duties not refunded; and a 24-month warranty for manufacturing defects, although an older policy page still says 1 year. None of the Douk reviews gives a shipping fee or says who pays the return shipping, and one notes that batteries in a package can affect courier options depending on destination. HiFiGO, the other store on this page, ships from China, gives 7 days to report a faulty item and charges a 30% restocking fee on later returns; each HiFiGO review spells out its terms.

Check the power supply and the quirks. Five listings (U10, U3, U3 PRO, U5 and U5PRO) say no adapter is included, the H1 page does not say whether one is, the E2 needs DC 15V at 3A or more, and the U3 PRO, U5 and U5PRO pages say more than 5V can damage the unit. The H1 is a pre-sale listing. The E2, Z1 and P5 play one output at a time. On the U10, U3 PRO, P32 and P10 do not connect the RCA and AUX inputs together, because the signals mix. The E2's maker says its two WIMA capacitors are used parts taken from earlier devices.

Questions before you buy

Do I need a balanced headphone amplifier?

Only if your headphones or cable are balanced. Among the 13 Douk Audio store listings, six offer a balanced output (4.4mm or 4-pin XLR): the Ampapa H1, E2, Z1, P5, U5 and U5PRO. The U5PRO page says its headphones must be balanced, with L+/L- R+/R- wiring, and its input balanced too; the U5 takes XLR input only. Of the other seven, six list single-ended 3.5mm or 6.35mm jacks and the P10 PRO page names none.

How much power do my headphones need?

The Douk Audio store listings give no single rule. They quote power into 32 ohms (430mW on the Z1 up to 1500mW or more on the U3 PRO and U5PRO) and a matching range: 16-300 ohms on the Q2PRO, 16-600 ohms on the H1, E2 and P5, 18-600 on the U10, U3 and U5, 24-600 on the P32 and P10. Compare your headphones' impedance with that range and treat a milliwatt figure with no stated load as incomplete.

Do tube headphone amplifiers need a warm-up?

The listings that mention it say yes. The P5 needs a 10-30 second warm-up with no audio while the tubes activate, and the P10 PRO's direct-heated tubes can ring briefly 25-35 seconds after power on or off or after a knock, which its maker describes as normal. The P32 lists 6J1, 5654, 6AK5 and EF95 as compatible replacements for its stock tubes.

Can I plug in two pairs of headphones at once?

Not on every model. The E2's three jacks work one at a time, the Z1 gives its 4.4mm output priority over the other jack, and the P5 plays one output at a time in a priority order (4.4mm, then 6.35mm, then RCA). The U3 PRO's 3.5mm and 6.35mm jacks work at once, per its listing.

Do these amplifiers come with a power supply?

Some do not. The U10, U3, U3 PRO, U5 and U5PRO say no adapter is included, and the U3 PRO, U5 and U5PRO say more than 5V can damage the unit. The P32 and P10 list a DC 5V adapter, the E2 needs DC 15V at 3A or more, and the H1 page does not say whether a supply is in the box. Confirm what ships before you order.

What are the stores' return and warranty terms?

Douk Audio's store allows a return request within 30 days of delivery. Douk must approve it first, the item goes back within 7 days of approval, and original shipping fees and duties aren't refunded. The warranty is 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair or replacement, although an older policy page still says 1 year. HiFiGO's terms differ (7 days for faulty items, a 30% restocking fee on later returns) and are in each HiFiGO review.
