How to choose VU Meters & Spectrum Displays
All eight reviews here come from one store, Douk Audio's store at doukaudio.com (seven Douk Audio and one Douk Audio Lab), at $39.99 to $99.99 as priced on October 23, 2026. These are displays that show a signal's level; they do not play music or change the sound, and the TX7 and VU360 reviews say so. Compare the display type first. Two use analog needles (the VU22 with dual 45mm meters and the VU360 with an oversized dual-needle meter), four use LEDs or simulated tubes (the 16-bit meter's 16 LEDs, the VU56PRO's 56 segments per channel, the VU9MINI's glowing columns and the VU9 Pixie's two simulated glass tubes), the TX7 has a 960 x 320 touchscreen, and the TX1 is a word clock with a sound-reactive spectrum mode. The VU56PRO switches between VU (volume unit, 0dB at 0.775Vrms) and PPM (peak programme meter, 0dB at 1.5Vpp).
How the meter hears the signal matters more than its style. The 16-bit meter and the VU9MINI have a microphone only, so they follow sound in the room. The TX7 (3.5mm AUX line in or microphone), VU22 (RCA, 3.5mm AUX or microphone), VU360 (microphone plus a line input), VU56PRO (RCA and 3.5mm AUX in and out, plus microphone) and VU9 (3.5mm AUX or microphone) add a wired input; the TX1 page does not say how its spectrum mode receives audio. The TX7 review notes that mic mode follows ambient sound rather than the exact signal, and the VU9MINI review says high sensitivity can light its columns with no music playing. The VU22 and VU56PRO pass the signal through to their outputs; the VU360 page lists a 3.5mm AUX output but does not say whether it passes the input through.
Douk Audio's store applies the same terms to every listing: shipping in 2-8 business days with duties, taxes and customs included in the checkout price unless noted; returns requested within 30 days of delivery and approved by Douk first, shipped back within 7 days of approval, with original shipping fees and duties not refunded; and a 24-month warranty for manufacturing defects, although an older policy page still says 1 year. None of the reviews gives a shipping fee or says who pays the return shipping. The TX1 ($79.99) is a pre-order listing, so expect a wait before dispatch, and it is sold with or without a stand.
Check power before ordering. Every model runs from USB 5V. Five reviews say no adapter is included (the 16-bit meter, TX7, VU22, VU9MINI and VU9), and the VU360 page does not say whether one is. The 16-bit meter's page warns that more than 5V will damage it, and the VU22's maker advises against a computer USB port or a supply shared with the audio source. The VU22's RCA and 3.5mm inputs are wired in parallel, so use one at a time, and the VU56PRO's remote may come without its CR2025 battery.

Questions before you buy
What is the difference between a VU meter and a PPM meter?
The VU56PRO lists both. VU, a volume unit, has 0dB at 0.775Vrms; PPM, a peak programme meter, has 0dB at 1.5Vpp. Douk Audio recommends PPM for a more dynamic display and VU for more professional use. The two analog models, the VU22 and VU360, are described as VU meters; the other six are LED, tube-style, touchscreen or clock displays.
Does a VU meter improve the sound?
No. The TX7 review says it watches your signal but does not process or improve the audio path, and the VU360 review calls it a visualizer that does not play music. The VU22 passes the signal through to RCA and 3.5mm outputs, as does the VU56PRO, but neither is described as changing it. Treat these as decoration and level monitoring.
Do I need a line input, or is a microphone enough?
A microphone follows sound in the room, so the display is less exact and also reacts to other noise; the 16-bit meter and VU9MINI have only a microphone. For a direct signal choose the TX7, VU22, VU360, VU56PRO or VU9, which have a line input. The VU22 and VU56PRO can also pass the signal on to RCA or 3.5mm outputs; the VU360 lists a 3.5mm AUX output without saying what it carries.
How do I power a VU meter?
With USB 5V. The 16-bit meter needs Micro-USB at 0.3A or more per unit, the TX7 USB-C at 1A, and the VU22, VU9MINI and VU9 5V at 1A or more over USB-C. The VU360 needs 5V at 1A or more. Five listings say no adapter is included, and the VU22 maker advises against a computer USB port or a supply shared with the audio source.
What happens if the input signal is too loud?
On the VU56PRO the maximum input level is 2.5Vrms and the effective range 1.8Vrms; beyond that the display stays fully lit. The VU22 lists a 0.1-2Vrms input voltage with 100K input impedance. The other listings do not give an input range, so check a wired source's output level before connecting it.
What are the store's return and warranty terms?
Douk Audio's store allows a return request within 30 days of delivery. Douk must approve it first, the item goes back within 7 days of approval, and original shipping fees and duties aren't refunded. The warranty is 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair or replacement, although an older policy page still says 1 year.
