AUNE X8 Desktop USB DAC Review

A desktop DAC with USB, coaxial and optical inputs, RCA outputs and swappable op-amps, listed at $224.25 against a crossed-out $299. It suits owners who want 32-Bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512 over USB feeding an amplifier; no headphone output is listed.

Our verdict

A fit for a desktop chain that wants a USB, coaxial and optical DAC with swappable op-amps and a variable RCA pre-amp output. Look elsewhere if you need a headphone output, Bluetooth or a clear answer on which DAC chip is inside, because the page names both ES9038Q2M and an Aune-developed FPGA. Every figure here is the store's own.

Why 3.6/5: A specification list with figures lifts it; the store's own terms contradict each other and no outside test of the model was checked, which hold it back.

The AUNE X8, from a China-based maker according to the page, is listed at $224.25 as a desktop DAC with USB Type-B, coaxial and optical inputs and RCA outputs. The page gives PCM up to 32-Bit/768kHz and native DSD512 over USB, a 2.0Vrms output, THD+N of 0.0006% and a signal to noise ratio of 117dB. It also says the op-amps can be swapped and names seven filter options.

Options and pricing

Five options are listed, all $224.25 against a crossed-out price of $299, and all orderable when the page was read. They combine Silver or Black with a US (110V), EU (230V) or UK (230V) plug; four are labeled Package 1 and the Black US-plug option is labeled Package 2. The specification section describes a 001 package with OPA2134 and NJM5532 op-amps and a 002 package with five op-amp types, without saying how they match those labels. The package list names a USB cable, a power supply, an extractor clip, a carry box and a user guide.

How it compares

The SMSL SU-6 at $169.99 has Bluetooth 5.0 with LDAC in its name, whereas the X8 page says Bluetooth: No; both list 32-Bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512. The TOPPING DX5 II is $299 and is named a DAC and amp, while the X8 title says DAC Amp but its page lists only RCA outputs. The X8 at $224.25 is the one for swappable op-amps and a variable pre-amp output; the SU-6 is the one for wireless input.

Shipping, returns and warranty

HiFiGO sells from hifigo.com and says every order leaves its warehouse in China, usually 1-3 business days after it is placed, and says its delivery times are estimates, not promises. Its shipping policy gives the United States 1-2 weeks (about 10 days on average) by Priority and 6-10 days by Premium, both with duties and taxes prepaid by the store; Canada 2-3 weeks; the United Kingdom 1-2 weeks; and Australia 10-15 days. Express couriers (DHL, UPS, FedEx) take 3-7 days, but then the buyer pays any duties and taxes. No shipping page names New Zealand, PO boxes are not accepted, and the free-shipping thresholds differ between the store's own pages, so check the cart. One of its two shipping pages adds that a lost parcel on an order above $50 gets only a 50% refund. A US buyer reported a $40 tariff charge in August 2025, after which HiFiGO said it had added a customs notice at checkout.

Read the return terms before you order. The homepage advertises 7-day returns. Both of HiFiGO's policy pages offer a 7-day dead-on-arrival cover (a replacement or a full refund, with the return postage refunded) and also describe 30-day returns, but a request made 7 to 30 days after delivery loses 30% of the MSRP as a restocking fee (10% more if the packaging is incomplete), plus shipping both ways and duties, and the FAQ on the same pages says there is no refund or exchange once 7 days have passed. One version recommends reselling an opened product locally. Custom IEMs and custom cables cannot be returned, no return address is published, and buyers describe sending items back to China.

HiFiGO's warranty runs one year from the order date for parts and labor; its policy names desktop DACs and amps, IEMs and dongles at one year and gives cables and adapters three months. HiFiGO decides between repair and replacement, the buyer pays the shipping, and faulty items go back for service, not for a refund. Claims go to [email protected], the only contact the store lists: its pages name no company, street address or phone, and its terms are governed by the laws of China.

On Trustpilot, HiFiGO had 4.6 out of 5 from 378 reviews when we checked on 2026-10-28 (91% five-star, 5% one-star), and it had replied to about 75% of negative reviews; Trustpilot notes the store has not invited customers to review recently. The one-star reviews mostly concern the short return window and the deductions on returns, items listed in stock that turned out back-ordered, slow email support and a tariff charge on a US delivery in 2025. HiFiGO says its products are genuine and come in the brands' retail packaging; it does not claim to be an authorized dealer.

What we liked

  • Separates the rates by input: PCM 32-Bit/768kHz over USB only, and 32-Bit/384kHz over coaxial and optical
  • Gives output level, frequency response, THD+N and signal to noise figures
  • Interchangeable op-amps, with an extractor clip and carry box in the package list
  • A fixed line out and a variable pre-amp output on the RCA ports, per the text
  • Seven filter options are mentioned

Worth noting

  • The DAC chip is es9038q2m in the data and title but an Aune developed FPGA in the text
  • The title says DAC Amp but only RCA outputs are listed; no headphone output is named
  • PCM word length lists only 16-bit and 24-bit while the text says 32-Bit/768kHz
  • Dimensions are given as '/', so size and weight are not stated

Questions before you buy

Which DAC chip does the X8 use?

The title and the data list ES9038Q2M, while the technical text calls it an Aune-developed FPGA DAC chip. The page does not reconcile the two.

What does it decode over each input?

Per the text, PCM up to 32-Bit/768kHz and native DSD512 over USB; over coaxial and optical, PCM up to 32-Bit/384kHz and DSD up to DSD128.

Does it have a headphone output or Bluetooth?

The page lists RCA as the output and says Bluetooth: No. No headphone output is named.

Where does HiFiGO ship from, and how long does it take?

From its warehouse in China, usually 1-3 business days after the order. The shipping policy gives 1-2 weeks to the US by Priority (6-10 days by Premium), both with duties and taxes prepaid, 2-3 weeks to Canada, 1-2 weeks to the UK and 10-15 days to Australia. Express couriers take 3-7 days, but the buyer pays any duties.

Can I send it back if I change my mind?

HiFiGO gives 7 days to report an item that arrives dead, damaged or wrong. Its policy also describes 30-day returns, but requests 7 to 30 days after delivery lose 30% of the MSRP plus shipping both ways and duties, and the FAQ on the same page says no refund or exchange after 7 days. Ask [email protected] before you open the box.

What warranty does HiFiGO give?

One year from the order date for parts and labor, for faults in build or materials (the policy names desktop DACs and amps, IEMs and dongles; cables and adapters get three months). HiFiGO chooses repair or replacement, the buyer pays the shipping, and a faulty item is serviced rather than refunded. Claims go to [email protected].

What we couldn’t verify

  • The DAC chip is es9038q2m in the data and title, but the text says an Aune developed FPGA DAC chip; the title says DAC Amp yet only RCA outputs are listed.
  • PCM word length lists 16-bit and 24-bit only, while the text says PCM up to 32-Bit/768kHz; the text also says there is no noise floor or distortion, yet it lists THD+N of 0.0006%. USB compatibility lists only Windows, while the text mentions smartphones and digital audio players.
  • Output Power of 2.0Vrms has no load, and wording such as 'dark background' and 'natural timbre' is the page's description, not a measurement.
  • HiFiGO's policy pages contradict each other: 30-day returns with a 30% restocking fee in one place, no refund or exchange after 7 days in the FAQ.
  • HiFiGO's pages name no company, street address or phone number; the only contact given is [email protected].
