Douk Audio VU9 Pixie Tube Sound Level Meter Review
Desktop sound level meter that recreates the Nixie tube look with simulated LED glass tubes. Feed it over 3.5mm AUX or let the mic pick up the room, then tune nine display modes, full color, speed and brightness.

Our verdict
The VU9 is a $69.99 desktop statement piece that brings the Nixie aesthetic to a desk, shelf or studio rack using LED-and-glass pixie tubes instead of expensive real Nixie tubes. It accepts either a 3.5mm line signal or an open-air microphone pickup, and nine full-color display modes plus gain and speed controls let you dial in the look. Just remember to supply your own 5V USB adapter and to seat the tubes in the right direction when assembling it.
- Best for
- Buyers who want a retro Nixie-style desk display that reacts to their music without paying real-Nixie-tube prices.
- Skip if
- You need a genuine Nixie tube display, or a product that includes its own power adapter in the box.
Why 3.6/5: Lifted by a wired 3.5mm input with automatic microphone fallback, nine display modes, power-off memory and a generous box (splitter cable, screws, feet). Held back by no adapter, no input-level figures, and a $10.00 premium over the microphone-only VU9MINI for a similar tube look.
The Douk Audio VU9 is a desktop sound level meter priced at $69.99, sitting in the visualizer and display category of hi-fi gear. It recreates the look of a Nixie tube audio spectrum in a tower that stands 175mm tall and 85mm square, and the box includes the VU9 itself, two simulated pixie tubes, a USB Type-C cable, a 1-to-2 3.5mm splitter cable, mounting screws, a screwdriver, isolation stand feet and a manual.
For signal, the VU9 offers two paths: a wired 3.5mm LINE/AUX input and a built-in microphone pickup. Douk Audio says the AUX input takes priority, and the unit automatically switches to mic pickup mode if the AUX cable is disconnected, so it can run in-line with a phone, computer, CD player or speaker system, or simply listen to the room on its own.
The display is the centerpiece. Instead of real Nixie tubes, Douk Audio uses LED beads inside glass tubes to mimic the retro glow while running at a safer DC 5V and costing far less. There are nine display modes with full-color adjustment, and gain, moving speed and brightness are all adjustable to suit different devices and environments. Settings are saved when power is cut, so the unit starts up where you left it. Power comes from USB Type-C at DC 5V with at least 1A, though the adapter itself is not included, and the meter uses a two-square-root signal compression display mode.

How it compares
At $69.99 the VU9 Pixie is the taller sibling of the Douk Audio VU9MINI ($59.99, which is $10.00 less): a 175mm tower of 250g (the VU9MINI is 145mm and 167g) with two simulated glass tubes, 9 display modes against the VU9MINI's 8, and a 3.5mm AUX line input beside the microphone, where the VU9MINI is microphone-only. Both want DC 5V at 1A or more over USB-C with no adapter in the box, and both list full-color settings and power-off memory. For a wired meter at the same $69.99, the Douk Audio VU56PRO lists 56 LED segments per channel, PPM and VU scales, RCA and 3.5mm AUX in and out plus a microphone, and a remote, but has no tubes, only a bar display.
Who it suits: the VU9 Pixie fits a desk or studio shelf that wants a nixie-style look with a real line input from a phone, computer or CD player. The page says the AUX input has priority and the unit falls back to the microphone when the cable is out. Skip it if you need output jacks or published input limits: neither is listed, though the box includes a 1:2 3.5mm splitter cable.
Shipping, returns and warranty
- Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
- Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
- Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
- Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
- Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
- Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.
For this product, the page lists shipping to US, UK, EU, AU and Other (the Other option is priced $10.00 higher) and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.
What we liked
- Two ways in: wired 3.5mm AUX plus microphone pickup, with AUX taking priority and mic mode resuming automatically when the cable is unplugged
- Nine display modes with full-color adjustment, plus gain, speed and brightness tuning to match different music and rooms
- Power-off memory keeps every setting, so it comes back the way you left it
- Runs at a lower, safer DC 5V than real Nixie tubes, with longer service life at a much lower price
- Slim 85mm-square tower with USB Type-C power that drops into any desk, shelf or studio rack
Worth noting
- No DC 5V power adapter in the box, so plan for a USB supply rated 1A or more
- The tubes must be fitted in the correct direction or they will not light up
- Simulated tubes rather than genuine Nixie tubes, so tube purists may prefer the real thing
Questions before you buy
Does the VU9 include a power adapter?
No. The box has the VU9, two tubes, a USB cable, a 3.5mm splitter cable, M2 screws, a screwdriver, isolation stand feet and a manual, but you need to supply your own DC 5V (1A or more) USB adapter.
How does the VU9 receive audio?
Two ways: a wired 3.5mm AUX/LINE input, or its built-in microphone pickup. The AUX input has priority, and the unit automatically switches to mic pickup mode when the AUX cable is disconnected.
Does it remember my settings?
Yes. The VU9 has built-in power-off saving, so display mode, color, speed, brightness and gain survive a restart with no need to reset parameters.
What is the return and warranty policy?
Douk Audio's current policy pages give you 30 days from delivery to request a return, which Douk must approve before you send the item back (within 7 days of approval); original shipping fees and duties aren't refunded. Its warranty covers manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, with free repair or replacement.

What we couldn’t verify
- Price depends on the 'Shipping to' option: $69.99 for US, UK, EU and AU, $79.99 for Other. The page opens on US, so its visible text shows only $69.99.
- 'The same effects' as nixie tubes, 'longer service life' and 'accurate display' are page claims; no tube life, response time or accuracy figure is given.
- The page lists no input level range or impedance for the 3.5mm AUX input and no microphone sensitivity.
- The meter mode is printed as 'two square root signal compression' and is not explained; the VU9MINI page prints '2.5x RMS signal compression' for a similar mode.
- The packing list includes a 1:2 3.5mm splitter cable but the page does not say what it is for, and lists no output jack.
- Power: DC 5V ≥1A over USB-C; the page tells buyers to prepare their own adapter and names no plug type.
- Warranty: the 2-Year Warranty badge is all this product page says about cover; exclusions are on the store's warranty page (see the shared section).
