Douk Audio VU9MINI RGB Sound Level Meter Review
A nixie-tube-style RGB level meter with a built-in microphone, 8 display modes and magnetically attached tubes, powered over USB-C — plug-and-play desk lighting that moves with the music.

Our verdict
The Douk Audio VU9MINI turns a desktop into a light show for $59.99: nixie-tube-style columns that respond to music through a built-in microphone, with 8 display modes, full-color presets and adjustable brightness, speed and gain. The magnetic tubes and USB-C power make it dead simple to set up. Two things to plan for: there is no line input (the mic is the only source), and the power adapter is not included.
- Best for
- Adding moving, nixie-style RGB light columns to a desk, gaming setup or hi-fi shelf without running any audio cables
- Skip if
- You want a wired line input (this model listens only through its microphone) or you need a power adapter included in the box
Why 3.7/5: Lifted by a clear parameter list (55 LED beads, 10 brightness levels, dimensions), a useful FAQ on the knob controls and a $59.99 price. Held back by microphone-only pickup, no adapter in the box and no microphone sensitivity or range figure.
The Douk Audio VU9MINI is an RGB sound level meter and music spectrum display priced at $59.99. It is a desktop visualizer: a small device that listens to the room and converts live audio into glowing tube-style light columns — not an audio component, but an atmosphere piece for a hi-fi system, gaming monitor or living room.
The design echoes vintage nixie tubes, reproducing their iconic glowing columns in a modern form. The two tubes attach magnetically to the body with no screws, so installation takes seconds when you align the LED-bead side with the knob panel. Brightness, speed and gain are adjustable, and there are 8 dynamic display modes with full-color presets, letting you shift from calm evenings to energetic parties.
Power comes over USB-C for plug-and-play use, and the maker notes a DC 5V supply rated at least 1A is required — insufficient current may cause the VU9MINI to work improperly, and over 5V may damage it. The mode and gain controls are managed from the knob panel, and single clicks and long presses handle extras like the bottom LED light and factory reset. If your room is very quiet, the mic can pick up enough noise for the columns to display; turning down the GAIN knob reduces sensitivity.
A few operational details from the maker: the power adapter is not included, so you need your own 5V USB adapter; the tubes should be inserted carefully with the LED beads facing the knob panel; and the light columns may react to ambient noise at high sensitivity, which the gain control fixes.

How it compares
At $59.99 the VU9MINI is the shorter, cheaper sibling of the VU9 Pixie ($69.99, which is $10.00 more). Both imitate a nixie tube with LED beads in an 85 x 85mm tower, both list full-color settings and power-off memory, and both want 5V at 1A or more over USB-C with no adapter in the box. The VU9MINI is 145mm tall and 167g, with magnetic tubes, 8 display modes and microphone pickup only; the VU9 Pixie is 175mm and 250g, with 9 display modes, a 3.5mm AUX line input that takes priority over the microphone, and a 1:2 3.5mm splitter cable in the box. The Douk Audio 16-Bit MIC Sound Level Meter costs $39.99, which is $20.00 less than the VU9MINI, and is a single bar of 16 LEDs, also microphone-only.
Who it suits: the VU9MINI fits a desk, monitor or hi-fi shelf that wants nixie-style light columns reacting to the room, with no cable to the source. Skip it if you want the display tied to a known signal: its page lists no line input, and its FAQ says high sensitivity can light the columns with no music until the gain is turned down.
Shipping, returns and warranty
- Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
- Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
- Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
- Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
- Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
- Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.
For this product, the page lists shipping to US, UK, EU, AU and Other and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.
What we liked
- Nixie-tube-inspired glowing columns add retro-futuristic character to a desk, monitor or hi-fi shelf
- Magnetic tube mounting means setup takes seconds and no screws are involved
- 8 dynamic display modes plus full-color presets, with brightness, speed and gain all adjustable to taste
- The built-in microphone picks up whatever is playing, so there is no audio cable to run to the source
- USB-C plug-and-play makes it easy to gift for birthdays, holidays or desk decor
Worth noting
- No power adapter is included — you must supply a DC 5V (at least 1A) USB adapter yourself
- The only input is the internal microphone, so high sensitivity can make the light columns display even with no music until you lower the gain
- Some functions use click-and-long-press combinations (for example the bottom LED on/off and factory reset), so the manual is worth keeping nearby
Questions before you buy
Does the power adapter come with it?
No, the power adapter is not included. Use a USB power adapter with DC 5V output rated at least 1A; insufficient current may cause it to work improperly and voltage over 5V may damage the unit.
How do the tubes attach?
The tubes are magnetically attached — no screws are required. Make sure the side with the LED beads is on the same side as the knob panel, align the tubes with the slots and insert them carefully.
Why do the light columns show even with no music playing?
That is due to high input sensitivity from the microphone pick-up. Simply turn down the GAIN knob to reduce the sensitivity.
What are the shipping and warranty terms?
Douk Audio ships to nearly 200 countries from several warehouses; its shipping page lists 2-8 business days for delivery, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted. Its warranty page covers manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase.

What we couldn’t verify
- 'Syncs with every beat' and 'deepens your enjoyment' are page claims; no microphone specification, sensitivity range or response time is listed, and the only meter figure is a mode named '2.5x RMS signal compression', which the page does not explain.
- How well the microphone follows a quiet or busy room is not stated: the page gives no pickup distance or frequency range, and its FAQ says only that high sensitivity can light the columns with no music.
- Power: the page lists DC 5V at 1A or more over Type-C and no adapter, warning that too little current may stop it working properly and over 5V may damage it; it names no plug type or recommended adapter.
- The page says the tubes attach by magnets and must be fitted with the LED-bead side toward the knob panel; it gives no life rating for the LEDs.
- Warranty: the 2-Year Warranty badge is all this product page says about cover; exclusions are on the store's warranty page (see the shared section).
