GE 7-Pin JAN 5654W Vacuum Tubes (Matched Pair) Review
A tested and matched pair of low-noise, US-made GE JAN 5654W 7-pin tubes — mil-spec stock that drops into 6AK5, 6J1, 6J1P and EF95 sockets as a premium upgrade.

Our verdict
A matched pair of GE JAN 5654W tubes for $34.99 is one of the cheapest meaningful upgrades in tube hi-fi. These are low-noise, US-manufactured mil-spec NOS tubes considered among the best of the 6AK5/EF95 family, and they drop straight into 6J1-family sockets. The single hard rule: only use them where a 7-pin 5654, 6AK5 or EF95-family tube belongs, because fitting the wrong type can damage the amplifier.
- Best for
- Tube-rolling a 6J1/6AK5/EF95-equipped preamp or headphone amp with a matched pair of low-noise mil-spec NOS tubes
- Skip if
- Your amplifier uses any tube type outside the 7-pin 6J1/6AK5/EF95 family — the maker warns wrong substitutions can damage it
Why 3.6/5: Lifted by a clear replacement list, a prominent compatibility warning, a matched pair and a low $34.99 price. Held back by no electrical ratings, no matching criteria or readings and 'vintage' stock whose condition the page does not state.
This listing is for a tested and matched pair of 7-pin GE JAN 5654W vacuum tubes, priced at $34.99 for 2 pieces. They are US-manufactured vintage GE tubes sold as an upgrade for amplifiers and preamps that run the 6AK5/6J1/EF95 family.
The 5654W is a low-noise small-signal tube, and the maker describes this particular family — the 5654, 6AK5 and EF95 types — as among the best for audio use. As Mil. Spec. (JAN) electron tubes, they are rated for higher durability and life than ordinary stock. They are supplied as a matched pair, so both channels of a stereo amplifier receive tubes that were tested together.
Installation is a straight swap in compatible sockets: they replace 7-pin 6J1, 6J1P, 6J1P-EB, 6Zh1P-EV, 6AK5, 6AK5W and EF95 tubes. Nothing else is required beyond the usual care when rolling tubes — power the amplifier off and let the old tubes cool first.
The maker prints a clear warning that deserves repeating: substituting the wrong type of tube can damage an amplifier. 5654W tubes should only be used to replace the 7-pin types listed above, and must not be substituted for any other 7-pin tube. The pack contains 1 pair of matched GE 5654 tubes.

How it compares
The GE pair is the only tube listing in this group and, at $34.99 for two pieces, costs less than either op-amp. The op-amps are the other drop-in parts: the Sparkos Labs SS3602 Discrete Dual Op Amp (1PC) review ($89.99, $55.00 more, for one piece) and the Burson Audio V7 Vivid / Classic Discrete Dual Op Amp (1 Pair) review ($199.99, $165.00 more, for two). They fit DIP8 op-amp sockets, which tube gear does not have, and their pages give a size, a supply range or a gain figure that the GE page does not. The GE page gives only the type, the replacement list and a warning.
The Douk Audio CT1-BOX Dual Bias Current Probe Tester with VU Meters review ($56.99) measures bias on 8-pin power tubes such as the EL34 and KT88; its page lists none of the 5654W family, so it is not a tool for these 7-pin small-signal tubes. Choose the GE pair if your amplifier or preamp takes 6J1, 6AK5 or EF95-type 7-pin tubes and you want to try another tube; skip it for any other tube type, since the page warns that a wrong substitution can damage the amplifier.
Shipping, returns and warranty
- Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
- Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
- Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
- Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
- Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
- Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.
For this product, the page lists US, UK, EU, AU and Other under 'Shipping to' and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.
What we liked
- A matched pair is supplied, so both channels of a stereo amp get tubes tested together
- US-manufactured GE JAN 5654W tubes are considered among the best of the 5654/6AK5/EF95 family for audio use
- Mil. Spec. (JAN) construction is rated for higher durability and life than standard tubes
- A drop-in replacement for 6J1, 6J1P, 6J1P-EB, 6Zh1P-EV, 6AK5, 6AK5W and EF95 types — a low-cost way to change an amp's voicing
- Low-noise tubes suit preamp and small-signal positions where noise matters
Worth noting
- Strict compatibility: 5654W tubes should only replace 7-pin 6J1, 6J1P, 6J1P-EB, 6Zh1P-EV, 6AK5, 6AK5W and EF95 types — substituting wrong tube types can damage an amplifier
- No electrical test figures are published beyond the tubes being tested and matched as a pair
- These are military-grade tubes chosen for durability rather than a specific voicing, so the sound change is a matter of taste

What we couldn’t verify
- The page says the pair was checked and matched, but gives no matching criteria, check conditions, readings or date codes.
- The page calls the tubes 'vintage' and US-made and 'one of the best' of the 5654 / 6AK5 / EF95 family for audio, with no source. It does not say whether they are new old stock (the review's Best for line says NOS) or used.
- 'Higher Durability and Life' for Mil. Spec. (JAN) tubes comes with no hours or standard; the page gives no heater voltage or current, plate voltage, gain, noise or base-diagram detail.
- The page warns in capitals that a wrong substitution can damage an amplifier and names the tubes these may replace; it does not say how to confirm your amplifier's tube type.
