Our verdict

The L1 is a $39.99 problem-solver for anyone whose TV, console or portable player sounds too quiet next to other sources. It adds up to 20dB of adjustable clean gain through an NE5532P op-amp, accepts 3.5mm, RCA and 5-DIN inputs, and outputs to RCA and 5-DIN at the same time. The wide DC 5-24V input means it can share power with your amplifier. Just remember the AUX input takes priority and no power adapter is in the box.

Best for
Listeners whose TV, console or portable player is noticeably quieter than other sources and needs a clean 20dB lift.
Skip if
You need tone shaping or EQ, or a preamp with its own power adapter in the box.

Why 3.6/5: Lifted by $39.99 for up to 20dB of gain, three input types and a clear parameter list. Held back by a packing list that contradicts the power note, an input-sensitivity figure given in mW, and noise and distortion figures without test conditions.

The Douk Audio L1 is a mini stereo line level booster priced at $39.99, designed to lift the output of low-level sources such as TVs, video game consoles, MP3 players, phones and tablets so they match the level of other components, or to support longer cable runs between gear. It is a compact, all-metal unit with a built-in voltage boost and amplification circuit.

The gain stage provides up to 20dB of adjustable boost, and within its DC 5-24V wide input range the L1 always works at a high internal voltage of 26V, providing plus or minus 12.5V of high output amplitude for headroom. The signal path uses a TI NE5532P op-amp in a pluggable socket so other op-amps can be swapped in to taste, mounted on a double-sided PCB behind a high-quality sealed potentiometer for volume adjustment. Frequency response is quoted at 20Hz-20kHz within plus or minus 0.5dB, with THD of 0.06% maximum and an S/N ratio above 80dB.

Connections cover 3.5mm AUX, stereo RCA and 5-DIN inputs and stereo RCA plus 5-DIN outputs, which suits sources from iPods and iPads to portable CD players and computers. The 5-DIN and stereo RCA outputs can work at the same time. Douk Audio pitches the L1 for home stereo systems, mixers, speaker setups, karaoke, audio recording, parties and live stage use, wherever an extra injection of output level is needed.

Two practical notes from Douk Audio: the 3.5mm AUX input has priority, so disconnect the AUX cable if you want to use the 5-DIN or stereo RCA input; and the box includes a USB-to-DC cable but not a power adapter, so you will power it from a phone charger, power bank or computer. The all-metal chassis also shields the electronics from electromagnetic interference.

How it compares

The nearest alternative is the smaller Douk Audio L1 MINI Line Level Booster 20dB Preamp review ($39.99), at the same price. Both pages list up to 20dB of adjustable gain, a 26V internal rail, ±12.5V maximum output, THD of 0.06% at most and an NE5532P op-amp in a pluggable socket. The L1 here adds a 5-DIN input and output and a wider DC 5-24V power input, and quotes an S/N ratio of above 80dB; the L1 MINI drops the 5-DIN jacks, takes DC 5V at 350mA or more, and quotes above 90dB. The L1 MINI is also smaller, 65 x 89 x 27mm and 141g against 87 x 63 x 48mm and 155g. Choose the L1 if a 5-DIN source, or sharing an amplifier's DC supply, matters. Otherwise the L1 MINI is the smaller body with the higher quoted S/N ratio, though neither figure has test conditions.

If the aim is tone rather than level, a tube preamp at a similar price works differently. The Nobsound NS-10P Vacuum Tube Stereo Preamp review ($49.99) lists only 1.5-2.0x voltage gain, so it is aimed at tone with a small gain, while the L1 lifts a quiet source by up to 20dB (the L1 MINI page puts that at 10 times). The Nobsound VOL-3 Passive Preamp Attenuator review ($46.99) is the opposite tool: a passive volume control with no gain and no power, for sources that are already too loud. For a quiet TV, phone or console feeding an amplifier, the L1 is the one built to add level.

Shipping, returns and warranty

  • Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
  • Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
  • Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
  • Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
  • Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
  • Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.

For this product, the page has a 'Shipping to' selector (US, UK, EU, AU, Other) and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.

What we liked

  • Boosts quiet sources like TVs, game consoles, MP3 players and phones up to 20dB to match other components
  • Adjustable gain dial makes it easy to match different source levels or support longer cable runs
  • Three input types including a 5-DIN connection for vintage-style gear
  • NE5532P op-amp in a pluggable socket for easy rolling, on a double-sided PCB
  • Wide DC 5-24V input can share an amplifier's power supply, and the internal rail runs at 26V for headroom

Worth noting

  • The 3.5mm AUX input has priority, so you must unplug the AUX cable to use the RCA or 5-DIN inputs
  • No power adapter is included; it runs from a phone charger, power bank or computer via the supplied USB-to-DC cable
  • It raises signal level only, with no tone controls or EQ to shape the sound

What we couldn’t verify

  • Power: the page's tips say a USB-to-DC cable is included and no power adapter, and the store's product description lists a 'USB to DC Cable' in its packing list, but the page's packing list shows 'DC 5V Power Adapter x1'. The Power row says both; this review's earlier text said no adapter.
  • THD 0.06% maximum, S/N ratio above 80dB and 20Hz-20kHz (±0.5dB) are printed without test conditions; 'ultra-low distortion' is the page's wording, not a measurement.
  • Input sensitivity is printed as '150mW/50KHz at 1KHz', which is not a voltage and does not say what level the booster expects.
  • The page gives a DC 5-24V input range with no current rating or plug size (the L1 MINI page lists 5.5*2.5mm and 350mA or more), which matters if you share an amplifier's supply.
