Our verdict

The U3 PRO gives you Class A headphone amplification for $54.99 in a box smaller than a deck of cards. The ±14V internal rail squeezes 1500mW at 32 ohms from a plain 5V supply, op-amp rolling is built in, and both 3.5mm and 6.35mm jacks work at the same time. Feed it a clean 5V/1A supply and it is an easy upgrade for quiet laptop outputs or weak motherboard jacks.

Best for
Desktop listeners who want a tiny, affordable Class A amp to drive anything from IEMs to 600-ohm headphones.
Skip if
You need line or speaker outputs, or you cannot supply a dedicated 5V/1A power source.

Why 3.6/5: Lifted by 1500mW or more at 32Ω, two inputs, two output jacks and a pluggable OP42 with named replacements. Held back by no adapter in the box, a strict DC 5V limit, and Class A and noise claims with no test conditions.

The Douk Audio U3 PRO is a mini desktop headphone amplifier priced at $54.99. It works in class A status and squeezes serious output from a modest DC 5V supply thanks to a built-in voltage boost circuit, making it a compact upgrade for computer and portable audio setups.

The innovative circuit keeps the amplifier running at ±14V even when powered by just 5V, with a wide frequency response extension, excellent transient response and good dynamic range, and the maker describes the background noise index as excellent. Total power output reaches up to 1500mW under a 32-ohm load, enough to easily drive headphones from 18-600 ohms, and class A operation keeps distortion ultra-low with a warm, delicate, full and mellow character. Frequency response is quoted at 20-30kHz and SNR at 110dB or better.

The architecture is the classic OP+BUF combination of OP42 and BUF634 in a pure DC amplification circuit, and the OP42 sits in a pluggable socket so it can be upgraded to OP17, AD797, AD843, AD847 or OPA627 for a different flavor. Inputs cover stereo L/R RCA and 3.5mm AUX (use one at a time to avoid signal mixing), while the 3.5mm and 6.35mm headphone jacks can both output simultaneously. Power it from a DC 5V supply rated 1A or more - no adapter is included, and input voltage above 5V will damage the unit.

How it compares

At $54.99 the U3 PRO costs $18.00 more than the Douk Audio U3 ($36.99). The PRO page lists 1500mW or more at 32Ω against 1300mW or more, adds a 3.5mm AUX input and a 3.5mm headphone jack beside the RCA input and 6.35mm jack, and uses an OP42 and BUF634 pair where the U3 uses an NE5532 and a transistor current stage; both pages say Class A. The U3 accepts DC 5-20V; the U3 PRO takes DC 5V only, and its page warns that more than 5V causes damage.

The Douk Audio U5PRO uses the same OP42 and BUF634 pair and lists the same 1500mW or more at 32Ω, but with balanced XLR input and XLR or 4.4mm outputs; it costs $25.00 more at $79.99. The Nobsound P10 is $15.00 less at $39.99, lists 1100mW or more at 32Ω and includes a 5V adapter, which the U3 PRO does not. Who it suits: the U3 PRO fits a single-ended desktop setup with an RCA or 3.5mm source and a 5V supply of 1A or more. The U5PRO suits balanced sources and headphones; the P10 suits a smaller budget with an adapter in the box.

Shipping, returns and warranty

  • Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
  • Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
  • Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
  • Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
  • Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
  • Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.

For this product, the page lists shipping to US, UK, EU, AU and Other (a destination list, with no warehouses named) and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.

What we liked

  • Class A operation with a warm, delicate, full and mellow sound character
  • Built-in voltage boost circuit keeps the amplifier at ±14V even powered by DC 5V
  • Up to 1500mW into 32 ohms, easily powering headphones from 18-600 ohms
  • Classic OP+BUF design with OP42 and BUF634; the OP42 is pluggable for OP17, AD797, AD843, AD847 or OPA627
  • The 3.5mm and 6.35mm jacks can output at the same time, and the mini metal body takes almost no desk space

Worth noting

  • No DC 5V power adapter included - prepare one rated 5V at 1A or more; over 5V will damage the unit and under 1A causes poor operation
  • Do not use the RCA and AUX inputs at the same time, or the signals will mix
  • It is a headphone amp only - there is no line or speaker output on this mini chassis

Questions before you buy

What power supply does it need?

A DC 5V supply rated 1A or more; no adapter is included, and input voltage over 5V will damage the unit.

Can I use both inputs at once?

No - do not use the RCA and AUX inputs at the same time, otherwise audio mixing will occur.

Do both headphone jacks work together?

Yes, the 3.5mm and 6.35mm headphone jacks can output at the same time.

Can I upgrade the op-amp?

Yes - the OP42 is pluggable and can be replaced by OP17, AD797, AD843, AD847 or OPA627.

What we couldn’t verify

  • Price: $54.99 applies to the US, UK, EU and AU shipping-to options; the Other option is $59.99, and the page does not say why.
  • Class A: the page says the amp works 'in class A status' with 'ultra-low distortion' but gives no bias current, no THD figure and no test conditions.
  • SNR of 110dB or better and the 20-30KHz response have no stated test conditions; 'warm and delicate, full and mellow' is a maker description, not a measurement.
  • Supply: no 5V adapter is included. The page says over 5V causes damage and a supply under 1A will not work well; it names no plug size for the DC input.
  • The page says the 3.5mm and 6.35mm jacks can output together but does not say how that affects the rated 1500mW into 32Ω.
