Douk Audio U5 4.4mm Balanced Headphone Amp Review
A mini fully balanced headphone amplifier that runs its circuit at 24V from a 5V input, delivering 1400mW into 32 ohms for headphones from 18 to 600 ohms, with XLR and 4.4mm outputs.

Our verdict
The Douk Audio U5 is a compact balanced headphone amp for $52.99 that covers a lot of ground: a fully balanced circuit running at 24V internally, at least 1400mW into 32 ohms for 18-600 ohm headphones, and both 4-core XLR and 4.4mm balanced outputs. The pluggable JRC4580 op-amp invites upgrades. Bring your own 5V supply and an XLR source, and it is a serious little desktop amp.
- Best for
- Owners of XLR or 4.4mm balanced headphones who want a small, affordable balanced desktop amp with op-amp rolling potential
- Skip if
- Your source only has RCA outputs, or you expect a power adapter in the box — the U5 ships without one and needs strictly 5V DC
Why 3.7/5: Lifted by balanced XLR and 4.4mm outputs, 1400mW or more at 32Ω, a pluggable JRC4580 and a 149g body at a low price. Held back by an XLR-only input, no adapter in the box, and power and noise figures with no test conditions.
Weighing it up? Douk Audio Headphone Amplifiers Compared: Mini, Balanced, USB DAC, Portable Tube and Tube Preamp Models
The Douk Audio U5 is a mini fully balanced headphone amplifier priced at $52.99. It uses a fully balanced amplifier circuit with an innovative design that keeps the amplifier stage working at a high 24V even when fed a DC 5V input, resulting in wide frequency response extension, excellent transient response and a good dynamic range.
Power output reaches a total of 1400mW under a 32 ohm load, which the maker says makes it capable of driving headphones at any low or high impedance from 18 to 600 ohms. The volume knob adjusts smoothly without undesirable noise or channel imbalance. The design is pure analog — analog amplification and analog control — which the maker presents as reproducing the truest sound, with top-class performance in sound field, positioning and detail.
Connections are balanced end to end: stereo L/R XLR (3-core, female) input and selectable 4-core XLR female or 4.4mm outputs, ideal for XLR and 4.4mm headphone cables. The op-amp is an original JRC4580 in a pluggable socket, so different op-amps can be rolled in for other sound styles. The published specs include a 20-30KHz frequency response, SNR of at least 110dB and 0.005% THD, all in a 68x69x28mm chassis weighing 149g, with a USB-to-DC cable included.
Two practical notes: there is no DC 5V power adapter in the box, so plan to use your own charger — the maker recommends a supply of 1A or more, and warns that input over 5V will result in damage. And because the input is XLR only, single-ended RCA sources will need an adapter or converter.

How it compares
At $52.99 the U5 costs $27.00 less than the Douk Audio U5PRO ($79.99), its balanced twin. Both pages list an XLR input, XLR and 4.4mm outputs, THD of 0.005%, an SNR of 110dB or better, 18-600Ω headphones and a DC 5V supply with no adapter in the box. The U5PRO adds 1500mW or more at 32Ω against 1400mW or more, and an OP42 and BUF634 stage on a ±14V rail where the U5 uses a JRC4580 op-amp on a 24V rail. The U5 is the smaller at 68 x 69 x 28mm and 149g; the U5PRO page lists 70 x 82 x 38mm and 172g.
For single-ended gear, the Douk Audio U3 PRO costs $2.00 more at $54.99: it takes RCA and 3.5mm inputs, has 3.5mm and 6.35mm outputs and lists 1500mW or more at 32Ω, but no balanced connection. For a tube design with XLR, 4.4mm and 6.35mm jacks, the Douk Audio E2 is $167.00 more at $219.99 and lists 2W on high gain. Who it suits: the U5 fits owners of XLR or 4.4mm balanced headphones with a balanced source who want a small, inexpensive amp. The U5PRO suits those who want more power from the same chain; the U3 PRO suits a single-ended source; the E2 suits those who want a tube.
Shipping, returns and warranty
- Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
- Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
- Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
- Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
- Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
- Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.
For this product, the page lists shipping to US, UK, EU, AU and Other (a destination list, with no warehouses named) and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.
What we liked
- Fully balanced circuit with its own innovative design keeps the amplifier stage at 24V even from a DC 5V input, for wide frequency extension and excellent transient response
- At least 1400mW into 32 ohms easily drives headphones of any impedance from 18 to 600 ohms
- Balanced XLR and 4.4mm outputs cover modern balanced headphone cables without adapters
- Pure analog amplification and analog control aim at a truthful sound with strong soundstage and detail
- The pluggable JRC4580 op-amp can be rolled for a different flavor, and the volume knob adjusts smoothly without channel imbalance
Worth noting
- No DC 5V power adapter is included — the maker notes you can use your own phone charger
- The input is stereo XLR only, so single-ended RCA sources need a converter or adapter
- Input voltage over 5V will damage the amp, so the power supply must be strictly 5V
Questions before you buy
What headphones can the U5 drive?
It outputs at least 1400mW at 32 ohms and matches headphones from 18 to 600 ohms, covering both sensitive and demanding models.
What power supply does it need?
A DC 5V supply of 1A or more, such as a phone charger — no power adapter is included. Input over 5V will result in damage, so use a dedicated 5V charger.

What we couldn’t verify
- Price: $52.99 applies to the US, UK, EU and AU shipping-to options; the Other option is $56.99, and the page does not say why.
- THD 0.005%, SNR of 110dB or better and the 20-30KHz response have no stated test conditions. 'Truest sound', 'pure, uncolored sound' and 'top-class' in the features are maker claims.
- Power: the page calls 1400mW a 'total power output' at 32Ω and does not say whether that is per channel or for both, or at what distortion.
- Supply: no adapter is included. The page says a phone charger works and input over 5V results in damage, but it gives no minimum current beyond 'recommend above 1A' and names no plug size.
