Douk Audio DAC-Q11 USB DAC with Dual ESS9038Q2M + AK4493 Chips Review

A desktop USB DAC with two switchable DAC chips - ESS9038Q2M and AK4493 - so you can flip between robust dynamics and refined tone on the fly. PCM 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256 over USB, with dual OLED screens.

Our verdict

The DAC-Q11 earns its $149.99 asking price with a genuinely unusual feature: two DAC chips you can switch between by ear, ESS9038Q2M for dynamics and AK4493 for refinement, each able to feed its own output group at the same time. Strong measurements, dual OLED readouts and a glass-window case round it out. The quirks are driver notes and a battery-less remote, not sound quality.

Best for
Desktop listeners who want to compare two DAC house sounds in one box and feed multiple outputs at once.

The Douk Audio DAC-Q11 is a desktop digital-to-analog converter priced at $149.99. It accepts PC-USB, coaxial and optical inputs and outputs to two groups of stereo RCA and two groups of AUX connections, in a CNC-molded case with a glass window on top that shows off the internal structure.

The headline feature is patented dual DAC chip switching - the maker calls it a world first. Two chips, the ESS9038Q2M and the AK4493, can be toggled so you can enjoy either the robust dynamics of the ESS or the refined tones of the AKM. There are three working modes with two different sound effects, supporting simultaneous output of either chip to groups 1 and 2, or the AK4493 to group 1 while the ESS9038Q2M feeds group 2. Measured performance is excellent: SNR of 117dB or better and THD of 0.0003%, with PC-USB handling 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256 for high-resolution files.

Two OLED screens display real-time sampling rates, volume levels and decoding chip status, and a large volume knob handles delicate level adjustments. A remote control adds convenience, and the CNC integrated molding with anodizing keeps the design modern. A few practical notes from the manufacturer: the remote may ship without its 2 x AAA batteries, Windows 7 recognizes the PC-USB input only after installing the driver (other systems need a driver only for DSD playback), and the volume setting applies to all outputs since the two RCA and two AUX groups are controlled simultaneously.

Douk Audio ships worldwide with free and expedited shipping options at varying cost by country. Packages under 2kg travel by airmail in roughly 10-25 days, while orders over 2kg ship via DHL/UPS/FedEx in about 5-8 days, and any import duties or customs charges are the customer's responsibility. Returns are free within 30 days for a full refund, and every item carries a 1-year warranty. Exclusions cover orders placed by mistake, man-made damage or misuse, a change of mind, and anything outside the warranty terms.

What we liked

  • Switchable dual DAC chips: enjoy the robust dynamics of the ESS9038Q2M or the refined tones of the AK4493, even routed to two output groups simultaneously
  • Excellent measured performance - SNR of 117dB or higher and THD of 0.0003%
  • PC-USB input supports 32-bit/384kHz transmission and DSD256 playback
  • Dual OLED screens show sampling rate, volume level and which decoding chip is active in real time
  • Glass top window, CNC anodized body and an easy-to-use large volume knob, with optical, coaxial and USB inputs

Worth noting

  • The remote control may not include the required 2 x AAA batteries
  • On Windows 7 the PC-USB input is recognized only with a driver installed; on other systems a driver is needed just for DSD files
  • All outputs are volume-linked - the RCA and AUX output groups are controlled by the same volume setting

Questions before you buy

How does the dual-chip design work?

There are 3 working modes with 2 different sound effects: either chip can output simultaneously to groups 1 and 2, or the AK4493 feeds group 1 while the ESS9038Q2M feeds group 2; the volume of the outputs is controlled simultaneously.

What resolutions are supported?

The PC-USB input supports 32-bit/384kHz transmission and DSD256 playback, and the two output groups of RCA and AUX can work at the same time.

Do I need to install drivers?

On Windows 7 the PC-USB input is recognized only when the driver is installed; for other systems the driver is required only when playing DSD files.

Is a remote included?

Yes, a remote control is included for easier operation, but it may not include the 2 x AAA batteries, so prepare them yourself.
