Our verdict

The P1 packs a tube preamp, a 24-bit/192kHz USB DAC and a headphone amp into one $89.99 desktop box, and adds aptX-HD Bluetooth plus a switchable tone stage for good measure. It is a flexible front end for a small system rather than a do-everything amplifier: pair it with a power amp or active speakers, or use it purely as a headphone station. If you need digital optical/coaxial inputs or speaker-level outputs, keep looking.

Best for
Desktop and small-room listeners who want tube tone plus a USB DAC and headphone amp from one compact box.
Skip if
You need to drive passive speakers directly, or you want optical and coaxial digital inputs.

Why 3.6/5: Lifted by $89.99 for a tube preamp, USB DAC and headphone amp with a 0.01% THD figure, a 160mW headphone stage and a full packing list. Held back by tubes that ship at random, no optical or coaxial input, and figures with no test conditions.

The Douk Audio P1 is a compact desktop component priced at $89.99 that covers three jobs in one chassis: a vacuum tube preamplifier, a USB DAC and a headphone amplifier. It belongs to the mini tube preamp class of hi-fi gear, built around a pair of vacuum tube stages plus an NE5532 op amp and what the listing calls the classic 47 headphone amp architecture.

Inputs are Bluetooth 5.0 on the QCC3034 chip with aptX-HD support, a PC-USB input on the CM6642 running up to 24-bit/192kHz, and a stereo RCA line input, so phones, computers, CD players, TVs and streamers can all feed it. Outputs are a stereo RCA pair at 2.3V line level and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the USB input is driver-free on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Douk Audio quotes THD at 0.01% and SNR at 103dB, with a 20Hz-20kHz (±3dB) frequency response and up to 160mW into 32Ω for headphones matched between 32Ω and 300Ω. A bypass switch takes the tone circuit out of the signal path, and with it engaged the treble and bass knobs give roughly ±6dB of adjustment. The unit measures 180 x 118 x 36mm and weighs 0.47kg, and the box contains the preamp, two vacuum tubes, a 12V DC adapter, a USB cable, a Bluetooth antenna and a manual.

How it compares

The Douk Audio DAC-T1 PRO Tube Stereo Preamp review ($169.99) and the Douk Audio P1 PLUS Bluetooth Tube Preamp review ($189.99) are the step-ups from the P1, at $80.00 and $100.00 more. Both add optical and coaxial inputs, an OLED screen and a remote. The DAC-T1 PRO page lists an ESS9028Q2M DAC at 24bit/192KHz, 150mW for 16-300Ω headphones and THD of 0.08%; the P1 PLUS page lists PCM 384KHz/32Bit and DSD256 over USB, up to 750mW for 16-600Ω headphones, VU meters and THD of 0.1%. The P1 page prints the lowest distortion of the three (0.01%), but its SNR of 103dB is also the lowest (the others print 110dB or better and 106dB or better), and none of the pages gives test conditions. The P1 is the pick if Bluetooth, USB and RCA cover your sources and a 300Ω headphone limit is enough; the others are for digital sources arriving over optical or coaxial.

The Douk Audio P2 Mini Bluetooth Tube Preamp review ($73.99) is $16.00 cheaper and gives up the computer USB DAC input: its page lists Bluetooth 5.0, stereo RCA, U-disk and TF card inputs, no PC-USB link and a 100mW headphone output for 16-64Ω headphones, against 160mW for 32-300Ω on the P1 page. The P2 Mini adds a mid control, a remote and card playback; the P1 adds the computer connection, a lower printed THD (0.01% against 0.05% on the P2 Mini page) and a higher-impedance headphone range. If a computer or phone is your main source, the P1 fits; if you play files from a stick or card, the P2 Mini does.

Shipping, returns and warranty

  • Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
  • Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
  • Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
  • Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
  • Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
  • Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.

For this product, the page has a 'Shipping to' selector (US, UK, EU, AU, Other) and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.

What we liked

  • Covers three roles in one small chassis: tube preamp, USB DAC and headphone amp
  • Bluetooth 5.0 on the QCC3034 chip with aptX-HD support for near-lossless wireless
  • PC-USB input decodes up to 24-bit/192kHz and needs no driver on Windows, Mac or Linux
  • Bypass switch takes the tone stage out of the circuit when you want the untouched signal
  • Headphone section is specified for 32-300Ω loads at up to 160mW into 32Ω

Worth noting

  • The RCA side is line level only, so it still needs a power amp or active speakers to play through speakers
  • No optical or coaxial digital input, so a TV or console has to arrive over RCA or Bluetooth
  • Outputs are RCA and 3.5mm only: no balanced output and no 1/4-inch headphone socket

Questions before you buy

Does the P1 need to be connected to a computer?

No. Bluetooth 5.0 and the stereo RCA input work without a computer. The PC-USB input is there when you want to run it as a 24-bit/192kHz DAC from a Windows, Mac or Linux machine.

Can the P1 drive passive speakers?

No. The RCA output is line level (2.3V), so the P1 should feed a power amplifier or active speakers rather than passive speakers directly.

What headphones will it drive?

The headphone jack is matched to 32-300Ω headphones and delivers up to 160mW into 32Ω, so it covers in-ear models through to 300Ω studio headphones.

What is in the box?

The P1 preamp, two vacuum tubes, a DC 12V power adapter, a USB cable, a Bluetooth antenna and a user manual.

What we couldn’t verify

  • Tubes: the packing list says JAN5725 x2, but the features text says 5654 or 5725 tubes ship at random (one of two models); the page does not say which pair you will get.
  • THD 0.01% and SNR 103dB come with no test level or load, and the frequency response is given as 20Hz-20kHz (±3dB).
  • The page says aptX-HD gives 'lossless transmission' over Bluetooth 5.0; it gives no bitrate, range or latency figure.
  • The page says PC-USB works with Windows, Mac and Linux but does not say no driver is needed; this review's earlier text said the USB input is driver-free.
  • The page lists 'Gain Setting' as a feature without saying what it adjusts or its range, and the DC 12V adapter has no stated current rating or plug type.
  • The store's option data lists a compare-at (crossed-out) price well above $89.99 for every option; the page text shows only $89.99, and nothing shows that the higher price was ever charged.
