Douk Audio K5 USB DAC and Headphone Amp Review
A five-in-one desktop unit - USB DAC, headphone amp, preamp, SPDIF DAC and USB-to-optical converter - built on an ESS9038Q2M with PCM 384kHz/32-bit and DSD256 support. Dual headphone jacks deliver 560mW at 32 ohms with high and low gain modes.

Our verdict
The K5 is easy to recommend as a first desktop DAC/amp at $79.99: an ESS9038Q2M with excellent measured performance, five different jobs in one box, DSD256 and 384kHz decoding, and dual headphone jacks with gain modes for anything from 16-600 ohms. The PURE switch that removes tone controls from the path is a purist touch. Just note the Windows 7 gap and that the knobs only affect the analog outputs.
- Best for
- Desktop listeners who want one small box to decode USB and optical audio and drive almost any headphone.
- Skip if
- You run Windows 7, or you need volume control applied to the optical/SPDIF output path.
Why 3.6/5: Lifted by an ESS9038Q2M with DSD256, two headphone jacks rated at 32Ω, tone controls with a PURE bypass and an adapter in the box. Held back by a headphone figure the page gives two ways, SNR and THD figures with no stated bandwidth or weighting, and no Windows 7 support.
The Douk Audio K5 is a compact USB DAC and headphone amplifier priced at $79.99 that plays several roles at once: a high-performance headphone amp, a USB DAC, a preamp, a SPDIF DAC, and a USB-to-optical converter for transmitting audio from a computer to devices that only accept optical digital input, such as some CD players, amplifiers and active speakers.
The chipset pairs an ESS9038Q2M DAC with an SA9312 DSP, OPA1678 low-pass filter and SGM8262 amp. It decodes PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256 over USB, and the measured performance is strong for the price: SNR above 121dB, a noise floor of only 3μV and THD of 0.0007%. Inputs are USB and SPDIF optical, while outputs cover optical, stereo RCA and the two headphone jacks.
Headphone listeners get dual 6.35mm and 3.5mm outputs delivering 560mW and 470mW at 32 ohms per channel, with high and low gain modes to match headphones from 16 to 600 ohms. Treble and bass controls have a midpoint position for a perfectly balanced default, and a bypass switch toggles tone processing off entirely for the purest sound. Power can come straight from a USB Type-C source with enough current (over 2A), otherwise the supplied DC 5V/2A adapter takes over. A combined volume/power button and colorful LED indicators for mode and sampling rate keep operation simple, all in a CNC-molded aluminum body.

How it compares
At $79.99 the K5 costs $27.00 more than the Nobsound Q3 ($52.99), a small USB DAC that also has a headphone output. The K5 page lists an ESS9038Q2M, PCM 32bit/384K and DSD256 over USB, 6.35mm and 3.5mm jacks rated 560mW and 370mW at 32Ω and a 16-600Ω headphone range. The Q3 page lists an SA9023 and CS8412 pair, PCM 24Bit/96K over USB, one 3.5mm jack rated 100mW at 32Ω for 16-200Ω headphones and an SNR of 105dB or better. The Q3 adds a coaxial input, which the K5 lacks; both take optical in.
The Nobsound Q4 at $49.99, $30.00 less, adds Bluetooth 5.0 and a U-disk input and lists 110mW at 32Ω for headphones with PCM to 96K over USB. The Douk Audio DAC-Q11 at $149.99, which is $70.00 more, lists two switchable chips, coaxial in and RCA and AUX outputs, but no headphone output. Who it suits: the K5 fits a desk with demanding headphones and a USB source that wants DSD256 and a PURE bypass. The Q3 and Q4 suit smaller budgets and headphones up to 200Ω and 300Ω; the Q11 suits a system that feeds speakers rather than headphones.
Shipping, returns and warranty
- Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
- Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
- Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
- Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
- Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
- Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.
For this product, the page lists shipping to US, UK, EU, AU and Other (a destination list, with no warehouses named) and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price.
What we liked
- Five roles in one: headphone amp, USB DAC, preamp, SPDIF DAC and USB-to-optical converter
- ESS9038Q2M decoding with strong numbers - SNR above 121dB, THD of 0.0007% and a 3μV noise floor
- PCM 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256 playback over USB
- Dual 6.35mm and 3.5mm headphone outputs with 560mW/470mW at 32 ohms and high/low gain modes for 16-600 ohm headphones
- Tone controls with a PURE bypass switch that removes them from the path entirely, plus colorful mode and sample-rate LED indicators
Worth noting
- Not compatible with Windows 7
- The volume and tone knobs only control the analog outputs (RCA and headphone jacks) - they do not affect the optical/SPDIF path
- Needs USB current above 2A to skip external power; below that the supplied DC 5V/2A adapter should be used
Questions before you buy
What is the USB-to-optical converter role for?
It lets the K5 take high-quality audio from a computer over USB and transmit it to devices with only a SPDIF digital input, such as some CD players, amplifiers and active speakers.
Which headphones can it drive?
16-600 ohms through the 6.35mm and 3.5mm outputs, with high and low gain modes; power is 560mW/470mW at 32 ohms per channel.
Is an external power adapter required?
If the USB Type-C source provides more than 2A of current, the K5 can be powered directly; below that the supplied DC 5V/2A adapter ensures proper performance.
Does the volume knob change the optical output level?
No - the volume and tone knobs only control the analog outputs, which are the RCA and headphone jacks.

What we couldn’t verify
- Price: $79.99 applies to the US, UK, EU and AU shipping-to options; the Other option is $89.99, and the page does not say why.
- Headphone power: the Parameters give 560mW (6.35mm) and 370mW (3.5mm) at 32Ω and high gain (THD+N under 1%), while the feature text says 560mW/470mW. The review's row said 470mW; it now follows the Parameters.
- Measurements: the review's row and the feature text said SNR over 121dB and THD 0.0007%; the Parameters give RCA SNR over 120dB with THD+N under 0.0007% and headphone SNR over 121dB with THD+N under 0.0008%. The row now splits them. No test bandwidth or weighting is given.
- 'Incredibly low THD' and 'ultra-pure sound' in the features are maker descriptions, not measurements.
- Windows: the Warm tips say the K5 is not compatible with Windows 7 and that Windows needs a driver for DSD, available from the store on request or from the manual.
- Supply: the Warm tips say the USB-C input can power the unit above 2A and otherwise to use the supplied DC 5V/2A adapter; the page names no plug type for it in each region.
