Our verdict

The VOL-4 solves a specific annoyance for $69.99: adding remote volume, tone, mute and power control to fixed-output DACs, streamers and hard-to-reach amps while keeping the rest of the system intact. Its 115 dB-plus SNR, 0.001% THD+N and matched L/R output suggest a clean, quiet signal path, and version 0-99 volume with OLED feedback makes settings easy to revisit. Just budget for a pair of AAA batteries, and mind the full-volume bypass behavior when the unit is off.

Why 3.5/5: Lifted by remote volume, tone and mute with a printed THD+N of 0.001%, SNR of 115dB or better and a full packing list, for $69.99. Held back by pre-sale status with batch shipping, undocumented volume circuitry and an RCA-only design.

The Douk Audio VOL-4 is a stereo volume controller designed to sit between line-level RCA sources and your power amplifier or active speakers. At $69.99, it targets HiFi systems with fixed-output DACs and streamers, or amplifiers whose volume controls are awkward to reach, and adds convenient remote control without requiring you to replace the rest of your setup.

On the spec sheet it is a stereo RCA-in, RCA-out device with a 0-99 volume range shown on an OLED display, plus bass and treble adjustment of plus/minus 9dB to shape tonal balance for different music and speakers. The signal path is quoted at SNR of at least 115 dB, THD+N of 0.001% and a 20Hz-20kHz frequency response within plus/minus 0.1dB, with input impedance of 47 kohm and output impedance of 10 kohm at 2V input and output levels. Power comes from USB-C at DC 5V drawing just over 1A.

The included remote controls volume, tone, power and mute directly from your listening position, and dedicated buttons keep everyday adjustments close at hand; note that it runs on 2 x AAA batteries which are not supplied. Two details worth knowing before buying: when the unit is powered but switched off, it passes the RCA signal through at full volume as a bypass, so lower the source or downstream volume before toggling power; and the GND terminal can act as an intermediate grounding point between a turntable and an amplifier or phono preamp when the turntable's ground lead is too short. This is a pre-sale listing, so the controller ships when stock arrives.

How it compares

The passive controllers are the opposite design: the Nobsound VOL-3 Passive Preamp Attenuator review ($46.99) and the RCA option of the Nobsound VOL-3/V1-XLR Passive Volume Control review ($46.99, which is $23.00 less than the VOL-4), whose XLR option is $72.99. They have no power, no gain, no remote and no tone control. The VOL-3 page lists RCA in and out with an ALPS A50K potentiometer; the V1-XLR page offers an RCA or XLR version with a quad-gang ALPS potentiometer. Neither page prints distortion, noise or frequency-response figures, while the VOL-4 page prints THD+N of 0.001%, SNR of 115dB or better and 20Hz-20kHz (±0.1dB), though without test conditions. Choose a passive unit for a strong source into a high-gain amplifier and the simplest signal path; choose the VOL-4 for remote volume, mute and tone on fixed-output gear, and note that it is RCA only and needs USB-C power.

If tone is what you want from a tube stage instead, the Nobsound TUBE-T4C Stereo Vacuum Tube Preamp review ($49.99) lists RCA in and out, bass and treble knobs, 2.5x gain and two 6J5 tubes, for $20.00 less than the VOL-4, but it has no remote and no display. The VOL-4 page also lists a pre-sale status, with orders shipping in batches through October, and a power-off bypass that passes the signal at full volume, so lower the source or amplifier volume before switching it on or off.

Shipping, returns and warranty

  • Shipping: Douk Audio's current shipping page says orders are generally processed no later than the next business day and arrive in 2-8 business days, with duties, taxes and customs fees included in the checkout price unless noted otherwise.
  • Older shipping terms are still online: airmail at 10-25 days for parcels under 2 kg, DHL, UPS or FedEx at 5-8 days above that, and a line saying the store is not responsible for import duties. Check the delivery estimate and any duties at checkout.
  • Returns: ask within 30 days of delivery and wait for approval before sending anything; an approved return has to ship within 7 days. Items need all packaging and accessories and no excessive wear, or the store can refuse them or refund part of the price. Refunds go to the original payment method after inspection.
  • Not refunded: original and expedited shipping, duties, taxes and customs charges, unless the law requires it or the store made the error. The return page does not say who pays return postage, and the older refund page excludes mistaken orders and change-of-mind returns from free after-sale service.
  • Warranty: 24 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with free repair, a replacement unit and free shipping both ways for covered repairs. Drops, liquid, DIY repairs, lightning, extreme temperatures and misuse are excluded (partial fees may apply), and damage from weak packing on the way back may not be covered. The older refund page still says 1 year.
  • Seller: the site is run by Shenzhen Anba Technology Co., Ltd (Shenzhen, China) and HONGKONG LONGSHENG Import and Export Trading Co., Limited (Hong Kong); support is by email at [email protected]. These terms cover orders placed on doukaudio.com; other sellers apply their own.

For this product, the page lists shipping from US, UK, EU, AU and China warehouses and shows Free Shipping, 2-8 Days Arrival, 30-Day Return and 2-Year Warranty badges near the price, plus a notice that orders will begin shipping in batches throughout October.

What we liked

  • Adds remote volume control to fixed-output DACs and streamers, or systems whose volume controls are missing or hard to reach, without replacing the rest of the setup
  • One remote covers volume, tone, power and mute from the listening position, with one-touch mute for calls and conversations
  • Clean signal path for the class: SNR of at least 115 dB, THD+N of 0.001%, 20Hz-20kHz (+/-0.1 dB) response and closely matched L/R output
  • GND terminal gives short turntable ground leads a closer grounding point, and 5V USB-C power keeps placement flexible

Worth noting

  • Pre-sale item: the listing takes orders ahead of stock, so shipping is delayed
  • The remote requires 2 x AAA batteries, which are not included — prepare them separately
  • When powered but switched off it passes the RCA signal through at full volume (bypass), so lower source or downstream volume before switching it on or off

Questions before you buy

Why is there still sound after the VOL-4 is switched off, and louder than before?

This is expected behavior: when powered but switched off, the VOL-4 passes the RCA signal through at full volume, bypassing the volume and tone controls. Lower the source or downstream volume before switching it on or off.

What is the GND terminal for?

It gives short turntable ground leads a closer grounding point. The VOL-4 can act as an intermediate grounding point between the turntable and your amplifier or phono preamp, giving more flexibility in equipment placement.

Does the remote come with batteries?

No. The remote requires 2 x AAA batteries, which are not included and need to be prepared separately.

What are the key audio specs?

SNR of at least 115 dB, THD+N of 0.001%, frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz within plus/minus 0.1dB, volume range of 0-99, and bass/treble adjustment of plus/minus 9dB.

What we couldn’t verify

  • THD+N 0.001%, SNR 115dB or better and 20Hz-20kHz (±0.1dB) are printed without test level, load or method, and 'closely matched L/R output' comes without a channel-balance figure.
  • The page does not say whether the volume and tone stages are analog or digital, or how many steps the 0-99 range has, so the distortion figure cannot be tied to a signal path.
  • Pre-sale: the page says orders will begin shipping in batches throughout October; it gives no date for a given order and does not say whether a pre-sale order can be cancelled before dispatch.
  • The page does not say whether the remote is infrared or radio, or its range, and it needs 2 x AAA batteries that are not included.
  • Power: the page lists USB-C at DC 5V and above 1A and suggests a 'compatible 5V linear supply' as an upgrade without naming one; the packing list shows a power adapter and a USB cable.
  • Power draw: this review's earlier text says the unit draws 'just over 1A'; the page's 'Power Input: USB-C, DC 5V / >1A' is the supply it asks for, not a stated current draw.
