Our verdict

The P2-FM is less a traditional preamp and more a desk companion: 6E2 magic-eye tubes and a VFD spectrum display up top, a preamp and headphone amp inside, and an FM radio, accurate clock and Pomodoro timer built in. At $79.99 it earns its space as a visual centerpiece while handling light audio duties. Headphone power is modest, so pair it with easy-to-drive cans.

You need serious headphone drive above 200 ohms, or headphones and line output running at the same time.

The Douk Audio P2-FM is a desktop preamp and headphone amplifier priced at $79.99, with an unusual twist: it doubles as an FM radio and a desk clock. Two 6E2 magic-eye tubes and a VFD screen react to the music in real time, displaying audio levels in sync with the rhythm from either the microphone or line input.

As an audio device it is a preamp and headphone amp in one. The 3.5mm headphone jack has priority over the line output and drives headphones from 32-200 ohms at up to 50mW into 32 ohms, with an input impedance of 20K ohms, output impedance of 10 ohms, SNR of 98dB or better and THD of 0.003%. Adjustable tube gain and 7 levels of VFD brightness let you tune the display to your room.

The radio section tunes three bands (87-108MHz, 76-90MHz or 65-74MHz) with manual input, auto-scan and up to 10 station presets, backed by a high-gain antenna. As a clock it is rated to within about one minute per year, with customizable font and animation styles and a built-in Pomodoro timer on a 30/5 minute work cycle. One quirk to know: when AUX input is plugged in, only clock and sound-level modes are available, and in radio mode the display shows frequency only. The package includes the preamp, two 6E2 tubes, a DC 12V adapter, an FM antenna and a set of feet.

Douk Audio ships worldwide with free and expedited shipping options at varying cost by country. Packages under 2kg travel by airmail in roughly 10-25 days, while orders over 2kg ship via DHL/UPS/FedEx in about 5-8 days, and any import duties or customs charges are the customer's responsibility. Returns are free within 30 days for a full refund, and every item carries a 1-year warranty. Exclusions cover orders placed by mistake, man-made damage or misuse, a change of mind, and anything outside the warranty terms.

What we liked

  • 6E2 magic-eye tubes and a VFD spectrum screen visualize audio levels in sync with the music
  • Serves as both a preamp and a headphone amplifier in one small desktop unit
  • FM radio with manual tuning, auto-scan and up to 10 saved stations, plus a high-gain antenna for reception
  • Clock keeps time within about one minute per year with customizable font and animation styles, plus a 30/5 minute Pomodoro timer
  • Adjustable tube gain and 7 levels of VFD brightness for any room

Worth noting

  • With AUX input plugged in, only the clock and sound level modes work; in radio mode the VFD shows frequency only
  • The 3.5mm headphone jack has priority, so headphones must be unplugged to use the line output
  • Headphone drive of 50mW at 32 ohms is modest, and the matched range stops at 200 ohms, leaving high-impedance headphones out of scope
