Douk Audio T4 PLUS Tube Phono Preamp with VU Meter Review
Handles both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges through seven switchable input impedances, adds JAN5725 tubes and a front VU meter, and drives 32-300Ω headphones.

Our verdict
The T4 PLUS is the cartridge-flexible member of Douk Audio's mini tube preamp family: MM and MC support with a seven-position impedance switch, JAN5725 tubes on rollable sockets, and a VU meter with its own sensitivity trim. It keeps the headphone amp from the T4 PRO, drives 32-300Ω cans and runs its RCA and headphone outputs together, all for $109.99. If you own a low-output moving coil cartridge and want a tube phono stage with meters, this is a rare combination at the price.
- Best for
- Vinyl listeners with MM or MC cartridges who want a tube phono stage with meters and a headphone amp.
- Skip if
- You only need a basic MM phono stage, or you need a power amplifier rather than a preamp.
The Douk Audio T4 PLUS is a tube phono preamp priced at $109.99, sold as a step up from the T4 PRO. An update from April 2022 added a VU meter adjustment on the side panel, so the meter sensitivity can be matched to different input signals.
Its party piece is cartridge flexibility: the phono input supports both MM and MC cartridges, with a multiple input impedance switch offering 1KΩ, 470Ω, 220Ω, 100Ω, 47Ω, 22Ω and 10Ω settings so low-output moving coils can be matched properly. There is also a 3.5mm AUX input for phones, tablets, PCs and MP3 players, and the listing notes the AUX input has priority, so the cable needs to be unplugged to use the phono input. The unit ships with JAN5725 tubes on pluggable sockets, described as an upgrade over the 6J1 series for detail, transparency and tone, and there is a built-in VU meter whose needle moves in warm light while the music plays.
The headphone output uses the classic circuit from the rest of the range, two NE5532 op amps matched to 32-300Ω headphones, and the stereo RCA and 3.5mm headphone jack can both be used at once with the single knob controlling both volumes. Power management is handled by a TI TPS5430 with 7205MOS devices, and the phono stage uses a TL071 + JRC2068 circuit. The case is a grey integrated moulding in aluminium alloy with gold-plated terminals, and the listing describes the T4 PLUS as a phono preamp, stereo preamp and headphone amplifier in one desktop-sized unit. The published parameter list is truncated on the store page, so check with the seller for the complete dimensions and weight.

What we liked
- Handles MC as well as MM cartridges, with a seven-position input impedance switch for matching low-output coils
- JAN5725 tubes on pluggable sockets for tube rolling
- Analog VU meter with a sensitivity trim on the side panel, added in the April 2022 update
- The same 2 x NE5532 headphone circuit as the rest of the line, driving 32-300Ω loads
- RCA and headphone outputs work at the same time under one volume knob
Worth noting
- The AUX input has priority over the phono input, so the cable must be unplugged to listen to vinyl
- The store listing's parameter list is cut off, so full specs such as weight and dimensions are not shown
- It is a preamp, so it needs an amplifier or active speakers to play through speakers
Questions before you buy
Does the T4 PLUS support moving-coil cartridges?
Yes. The phono input supports MM and MC cartridges, with switchable input impedance of 1KΩ, 470Ω, 220Ω, 100Ω, 47Ω, 22Ω and 10Ω.
What does the VU meter sensitivity control do?
Added in the April 2022 update, the side-panel adjustment lets you set the meter's sensitivity to suit different input signals for a better visual match.
Can headphones and the RCA output be used together?
Yes. The stereo RCA and 3.5mm headphone jack can output at the same time, with the knob controlling both.
Can I change the tubes?
Yes. The JAN5725 tubes sit in pluggable sockets, which the listing says makes tube rolling and sound shaping easy.
